The term Snake Oil Salesman originates from the 19th-century American practice of selling cure-all elixirs in traveling medicine shows. Actual snake oil was prized for its reputed medicinal properties, but modest compared to the claims of later cure-alls known as “snake oil.” Snake Oil salesmen would falsely claim that these potions would cure any and all ailments. Our modern version of Snake oil salesmen would be more commonly known as a scam artist.
